Happy Birthday

I had a coffee and dangerously delicious English muffin the other day with a former colleague. It was her birthday the day before and she showed me a video-text sent to her by former students, still at the school she left last year, wishing her a Happy Birthday and telling her she is the "best teacher ever" and that they "love" her. All very nice of course, but one thing troubles me.

The celebratory video sent to her by her erstwhile learners was sent to her cellphone, to her personal and private number. She did not share her number with the students, they found it somehow. What troubles me is that (a) they have her number and (b) have no compunctions about using it.

My onetime colleague, possibly because she is quite a bit younger than me, sees no problem with this. She especially excuses it because it was a positive interaction, but is unconcerned about such contact.

Am I wrong? Should students have a teacher's number? Should students be able to contact teachers outside school hours on their private numbers?
