I was in a foreign clime the other day (same state, but very different weather) and I drove past a school proudly displaying its school colors. Gates, fences, window frames - all were painted in bright, almost florescent yellow and equally bright almost florescent purple. Someone, somewhere made this decision and chose these colors which led to my pondering on this element of a school's image.
Many years ago, I attended an extended workshop / mini-conference on marketing and logos and image management and one of the sessions was on color choices. There is of course research behind all this, and the experts can associate specific feelings and reactions with specific colours. The sociology and/or history was also fascinating. Pink was once a color for boys. Red's association with danger is recent and its value as a warning has been reduced by its replacement with blue for emergency lights. But I digress.
I am old enough to remember that blue, especially dark blue hues, was associated with seriousness and solemnity and reliability. Many such schools chose dark blues for their colors.
Greens, browns and oranges were reminiscent of the schools' location in forests or deserts, while beachside schools often opted for yellow, white and blue.
I once led a taskforce at a start-up school where we chose red for the heat, yellow for the sun and blue for the sky, all related to the weather and climate of the school's location and with an eye to uniforms, spirit wear and sports uniforms.
However these florescences, while clearly striking, stumped me. I am sure that sports uniforms, and even sweatshirts, look quite striking however as colors for buildings and fencing, I'm not sure they work. Could the reason be nothing more than demanding, "Stop what you're doing and look at us?"
