This artifical intelligence (AI) chat bot is really cat-amongst-pigeoning in the international community and while none of my friends or former colleagues have raised it with me, I have seen much clutching at pearls and wringing of hands in the media. Again, some of these concerns are misplaced.
I have two responses to the headlines, one concerning essays and examinations and the other homework.
I put essays and examinations together because in my view of the world, these are both summative and intended to measure performance. The answer to any and all Chat GPT concern here is simple : in-person, proctored activities. Have the students write their essays, or their exams, in front of you with pen and paper so thay cannot use any electronic supports, and following suitable identification protocols. If students have been using artificial means to get to this point, they will effectively have punished themselves because they would not have prepared for these activities. Boom. Mic drop.
The homework question is slightly more complicated because I goes back to your definition of homework. Remember, I am a staunch believer in the role, value and importance of homework, but I cannot support much of what is assigned to those under our tutelage.
If you use homework as reinforcement (post lesson) or preparation (pre-lesson), in other words, homework as a teaching tool, then Chat GPT will not enter the picture. If you use it as measurement instrument, then you run into the very storm presaged so the solution is, don't do this. Leave measurement for controlled activities in front of you, during class or school time or an official evaluation period or in an official evaluation center, and use homework as one of your teaching and learning approaches. Problem solved.
